The view from the terrace of the café

Stop What You're Doing. Sit Down.
Kill Time. Relax.

via eMail, from Michael McKinnon Dear Ric,

Paris:- Wednesday, 2. April 1997:- Because of the weather, I was increasingly frustrated while in Paris by my inability to spend a few hours outdoors at a cafe, watching the world go by.

On the last day of our visit, as we were headed back to the hotel to start packing for our departure the next day, lo and behold the sun decided to say 'bonjour' and the wind decided to say 'adieu.'

We were just walking from our métro exit, Jules Joffrin, towards our hotel in the rue Ordener when I decided it's now or never for an hour or two at a café, basking in the rays of the sun and the aura of Paris.

Walking down Rue Simart, at the corner of Simart and rue Eugène-Sue, there is a small cafe surrounded by stalls selling everything from fromage to poisson to pots and pans.

The village of Montmartre is one of the most beautiful in all Paris and this was the perfect place for me to finally drown in atmosphere.

Sitting at a small table in the sun, our waiter brought us two cups of chocolate and I sat back to people watch. The setting was ideal, with all of the shopping stalls lining the street, 'tout Montmartre' came by on their way home to buy flowers must have flowers in a Parisian's home - or the evening's fixings for dinner.

Across the street, musicians, with guitar, trumpet and accordion began playing everything from dixieland to Piaf.

The street sweeper stopped sweeping and began dancing with his broom. Little girls let go of their mama's hand to do a little dance by themselves. Shoppers smiled, the waiter smiled and I knew that I had found the true meaning of Paris.

The Way It's Supposed To Be

Dear Michael,

Paris:- Saturday, 5. April 1997:- You said it all.

Regards, Ric
