Paris:- Saturday, 12. April 2003:- It has been two months since Allan Pangborn wrote about the origins of the Café Metropole Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine label here. In the meantime he has been taking care of other aspects, involving making the wine easier to order - via its own Web site.

Allan has been attending to other things too, such as his family and his yard, and has been helping out neighbors with their various mechanical problems.

Together we have been discussing a possible logo for Moonlight, which is the company name behind thephoto: oyster bar next to moonlight stand wine. This is not a fantasy name - it is part of Allan's real history. Between the two of us, a chore like this gets done in fits and starts because Allan has to design a Web site and deal with bureaucracy, and all of this is in fits and starts too.

Another important thing Allan is doing is listening to people who drink Café Metropole Blanc de Blanc. Sometimes he forgets to tell me what they say about the wine, leaving me with no drum to beat.

But this week he has sent a report about the 'Taste Washington' exhibition, that was on Sunday, 6. April in Seattle. At the food and drink show, Moonlight's stand was appropriately next to 'Seattle Caviar.'

'Taste Washington' Report

Moonlight Goes Out in Public

Kennewick:- The 'Taste Washington Wine and Food' event is an impressive experience. The exhibition hall was set up with dozens of islands of tables for wine tasting, next to specialty dishes prepared on site by many restaurants.

3,000 eager paying consumers flooded the exhibition site for three hours of eating, tasting andphoto: segway people mover conversation. Café Metropole was one of the few sparkling wines and it went well with the caviar and oysters at our neighbor's tables.

There was a lot of space between the islands so there wasn't the crowding that happens at other tastings. We poured 29 bottles of our Blanc de Blanc. For a while it looked like we might not have enough but the event planners have a pretty good idea of the demand so we were able to satisfy all who were interested. Several tasters spent the entire evening in our area.

This odd scooter is a Segway, and is called a 'people mover.'

It was a real feat for the restaurants to prepare the great dishes they presented in less than perfect conditions. The folks who do catering were in good shape but those who were used to having professional kitchens did amazing work on the equivalent of camp stoves. Many of the samples were cold and could be prepared in advance. There are some great wine and food experiences available in Washington State.

Some of the dessert wines were gone by the time I could get away to survey the show. These are the late-harvest sweet wines and come in 375 ml bottles with $20 to $100 prices. There were many excellent high-end red and white wines presented, and it is rare to have so many available in one show. No wonder it sells out every year.

My informants said we were one of the few booths with a line waiting for a taste. I literally poured and talked for over 90 minutes before the rush subsided. I was worried that we might run out.photo: restaurant setup, cooks

I got lots of good feedback, but that is usual for most shows. I did hear a number of people say ours was the best of the sparkling wines there. More than a few people made regular round-trips through our line and the adjacent oyster and caviar tables.

Next time I'll have to designate a person for photo duty. After the doors opened I couldn't get any time for shots for this report.
